TOKYO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Japanese copper wire and cable shipments rose 4.9 percent in January from a year earlier led by 
a 53 percent jump in exports, but domestic demand including from the auto sector stayed weak, an industry body said on Monday.
January shipments were estimated at 56,600 tonnes, slightly down from a revised 56,739 tonnes in December, data from the Japanese Electric Wire and Cable Makers' Association showed.
It was the third lowest shipment figure for January after 53,961 tonnes in 2010 and 52,686 tonnes in 2009, the association said.
&quot;We have yet to see a sign of vigorous recovery, with shipments for the auto sector remaining weak,&quot; said an official at the association.
Exports of copper cable and wire jumped 53.1 percent in January to 2,100 tonnes, but domestic demand climbed only 3.6 percent to 54,500 tonnes.
The appetite for copper, used in a wide range of products from utensils and construction materials to computer chips, is often seen as a gauge of economic activity.
Wire and cable shipments for the automobile industry fell an estimated 9.5 percent in January from a year earlier to 5,300 
tonnes, down for the fourth month in a row.
The government ended subsidies for purchases of low-emission cars in September, resulting in a cut in automobile production and weighing on consumption of copper.
Shipments for the communications sector fell 12.1 percent to 1,400 tonnes, declining year-on-year for a 10th consecutive year.
But shipments for the construction sector, which account for half of Japan's domestic demand, continued to recover, rising 5.6 percent to 23,600 tonnes, for a sixth consecutive year-on-year rise.
Japan's economy shrank slightly in the final quarter of 2010 but analysts expect a recovery this year as stronger exports to China and other parts of fast-growing Asia offset persistently weak domestic demand.&nbsp; Japanese manufacturing confidence rose for the second straight month in February and the mood in the service sector turned positive for the first time since 2008, providing more evidence of an economic recovery, a Reuters poll showed.
But a recent spike in commodity prices made manufacturers wary about the outlook for the next three months as they fret about the impact of rising costs on their profits, the monthly Reuters Tankan showed.
Shanghai copper firmed on Monday, shrugging off Beijing's latest tightening move, as the longer-term outlook for industrial metals remains robust.
Members of Japan's cable makers' association include Furukawa Electric (5801.T), Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (5802.T), Fujikura Ltd (5803.T), Hitachi Cable Ltd (5812.T) and SWCC Showa Holdings Co Ltd (5805.T).
