[SMM Tin Midday Review: Rate Hike Lands as Expected, the Most-Traded SHFE Tin Contract Returns to the 400,000 Yuan Mark]

Tin Midday Commentary, September 17, 2026

1. Price Review

Today, SMM #1 tin spot quotes were 397,700-401,100 yuan/mt, with an average price of 399,400 yuan/mt, up 3,100 yuan/mt from the previous trading day.

The most-traded SHFE tin contract consolidated this morning after its center rebounded, reaching an intraday high of 402,340 yuan/mt and a low of 396,310 yuan/mt, closing the morning at 400,370 yuan/mt, up 1.28%, back above the 400,000 yuan/mt level.

On the LME, LME tin 3M saw a slight correction, currently at $52,475/mt, down 0.43%.

2. Spot Market

Spot market activity cooled noticeably today, with very few actual transactions. After futures quickly reclaimed the 400,000 yuan mark, downstream buyers who had entered at lower levels showed no willingness to chase prices higher, while those on the sidelines had limited acceptance of current levels and mostly waited for a pullback before negotiating. Available spot cargo was also relatively scarce, with some suppliers still locking in supply through pre-sales.

On the end-use side, the uneven performance across sectors became increasingly clear in mid-September. The electronics solder chain, supported by the semiconductor cycle recovery, maintained resilience in high-end solder orders related to AI server power modules and advanced packaging, but traditional consumer electronics orders remained relatively scattered, and solder enterprises generally purchased raw materials as needed at high prices with no intention of chasing higher. In the tinplate sector, trader quote centers moved up on Baosteel's October base price increase, but pre-holiday end-use demand release fell short of expectations, spot prices struggled to catch up, and Q4 food and beverage stockpiling had not yet fully started. In the tin chemicals sector, the corresponding PVC market was still consolidating at lows, downstream product enterprises maintained low operating rates, social inventory destocking was slow, and concerns about "underperforming in peak season" persisted under the drag of the property chain. Overall, end-use demand had not yet formed upward synergy, and the demand side's response to the futures rebound was limited.

3. Comprehensive Outlook

In the short term, SHFE tin is in a technical rebound phase after the event risk cleared. The decision meeting expectations, causing tightening pressure to peak for the time being, and combined with tight spot supply and rising premiums, prices gained repair momentum in the short term. However, the dot plot remained hawkish, with bets on another hike in October exceeding half, meaning macro pressure has only been postponed rather than removed, and with end-use demand still lacking upward synergy, both the height and sustainability of the rebound remain in question. The most-traded SHFE tin contract is expected to consolidate in the 392,000-405,000 yuan/mt range in the short term, with resistance near 405,000 yuan/mt to watch on rebounds, while the 390,000 yuan level below has shown strong support after multiple tests. Going forward, closely monitor the evolution of October rate hike expectations and the realization of end-use peak-season orders.
