[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Weekly Review] Cost Advantages Fail to Halt Decline, Stainless Steel Scrap Prices Pull Back Under Pressure This week, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices in east China pulled back, with a quotation range of 10,050-10,150 yuan/mt. In Foshan, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices fell in tandem, with a price range of 10,000-10,300 yuan/mt. From a raw material cost perspective, the production cost of stainless steel using only stainless steel scrap is about 14,185.33 yuan/mt, while the cost using only high-grade NPI reaches 14,730.06 yuan/mt. The two still maintain a large cost spread, and the substitution advantage of stainless steel scrap remains significant. This week, stainless steel scrap prices consolidated and pulled back overall. During the week, SS futures fell further and hit bottom, with bearish sentiment continuing to build and spilling over into the spot market, dragging spot prices of stainless steel finished products down as well. The substitute raw material high-grade NPI also traded in the doldrums, forming a linked downward pattern across futures, finished products, and raw materials, leaving overall market sentiment bearish. Although stainless steel scrap still holds substantial economic advantages over high-grade NPI, stainless steel mills are currently facing inverted production costs and mounting profit pressure. Mills have a strong desire to bargain down raw material prices and continued to push for lower stainless steel scrap quotations, ultimately causing scrap prices to pull back this week. Overall, the cost substitution advantage is hard-pressed to offset multiple bearish pressures from fundamentals. Although the market is currently in the traditional September-October peak season, actual downstream end-user consumption remains persistently weak, and expectations for a peak-season recovery have completely fallen through, weakening overall market confidence. This week, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices in east China pulled back, with a quotation range of 10,050-10,150 yuan/mt; prices in the Foshan area fell in tandem, with a price range of 10,000-10,300 yuan/mt. From a raw material production cost perspective, the cost of producing stainless steel entirely from stainless steel scrap is currently about 14,185.33 yuan/mt, while the cost using only high-grade NPI reaches 14,730.06 yuan/mt. The two still maintain a large cost spread, and the substitution advantage of stainless steel scrap remains significant.

This week, stainless steel scrap prices consolidated lower overall. During the week, SS futures fell further and hit bottom, with bearish sentiment continuing to build and spilling over into the spot market, dragging spot prices of stainless steel finished products lower as well; the substitute raw material high-grade NPI also remained in the doldrums. Futures, finished steel, and raw materials formed a synchronized downward pattern, and overall market sentiment was bearish. Although stainless steel scrap still holds a significant economic advantage over high-grade NPI, stainless steel mills are currently facing losses in production costs, with profitability pressure coming to the fore. Mills have a strong desire to bargain down raw material prices and continued to push down stainless steel scrap market quotes, ultimately causing scrap prices to pull back this week.

Overall, the cost substitution advantage is insufficient to offset multiple bearish pressures from fundamentals. Although the market is currently in the traditional "September-October peak season" for consumption, actual downstream end-user consumption remains persistently weak, and expectations for a peak season recovery have completely failed to materialize, weakening overall market confidence. Dragged by demand, stainless steel mills' September production schedules have pulled back somewhat, and expectations for rigid demand for stainless steel scrap have weakened in tandem. At the same time, the industry's tight tax invoice issue continues to plague the market, further suppressing trading activity and liquidity. Under the combined bearish resonance of synchronized weakness in futures and spot, peak season demand falling short of expectations, mills' losses leading to price suppression, weakening rigid demand, and persistent industry pain points, bottom support for scrap is gradually weakening, and stainless steel scrap prices are expected to remain in the doldrums in the short term.

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] Nickel Prices Drag Futures Lower While Just-in-Time Procurement Provides Support; Stainless Steel Spot and Futures Diverge on First Trading Day After Holiday According to SMM on October 8, on the first trading day after the National Day holiday, SS futures consolidated lower, dragged by SHFE nickel. By the close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 13,455 yuan/mt. In the spot market, although SS futures fell notably, transaction activity improved thanks to post-holiday restocking demand in surrounding markets, and stainless steel spot prices saw limited declines. SS most-traded futures contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2611 was quoted at 13,530 yuan/mt, down 165 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 640-1,040 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coils in Wuxi was flat; for cold-rolled 304/2B coils with mill edges, the average price in Wuxi fell 25 yuan/mt, and the average price in Foshan fell 50 yuan/mt; cold-rolled 316L/2B coil prices in Wuxi were flat; hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coil quotes in Wuxi were flat; cold-rolled 430/2B coils in both Wuxi and Foshan were flat. Before the holiday, the stainless steel market overall showed a consolidating pattern of external weakness and internal stability, a falsified peak season, and a balance between longs and shorts. Expectations for a traditional September-October peak season recovery completely fell through, end-use demand remained persistently weak, downstream stocking largely wound down ahead of the long holiday, and the market saw only sporadic just-in-time transactions, with overall trading sluggish and the demand side continuing to pressure spot prices. Futures showed an independent, resilient trend, not deeply following the decline amid weakness in nonferrous metals and SHFE nickel, with strong support from low valuations. Spot...
