[SMM Fuel Cell Dynamics] Hydrogen Mobility Adds Another New Scenario, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Shared Bikes in Yiwu, Xinjiang Are Expected to Enter Service

Recently, the Development and Reform Commission of Yiwu County, Hami City, disclosed that the county's hydrogen fuel cell shared two-wheeler project is about to officially enter operation, marking that Xinjiang's first hydrogen fuel cell shared two-wheeler demonstration operation project is about to be launched and put into use.

Project Overview and Construction Progress

The project is invested in and constructed by Xinjiang Kunhua New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. in Yiwu County, with a construction period from July to September 2026, and it plans to officially enter trial operation in September. The project's construction mainly includes the procurement of smart equipment, the construction of supporting facilities at parking sites, and the development of a smart operation system, aiming to create a standardized and intelligent hydrogen energy shared mobility operation system.

The project's main deployment scope covers core urban and rural areas such as Yiwu Town and Tuhulu Township in Yiwu County, with key coverage of densely populated areas including the county government affairs zone, multiple residential communities, hospitals, schools, commercial districts, talent apartments, computing power centers, and the hydrogen energy industrial park.

Initial Deployment Scale and Supporting Facilities

In the first phase, the project will deploy 100 third-generation hydrogen fuel cell shared two-wheelers, provide 20 rotating hydrogen storage cylinders, and simultaneously plan and construct 11 standardized smart parking sites to build a hydrogen energy shared mobility network covering core urban and rural areas.

In terms of energy replenishment, these shared two-wheelers will be refueled with hydrogen at hydrogen refueling stations and then distributed through a "hydrogen swap model," offering notable advantages such as fast hydrogen refueling, no charging anxiety, and no charging safety hazards. The vehicles have comprehensive safety configurations and are equipped with BeiDou + GPS dual-mode positioning systems, hydrogen leak sensors, and smart electronic locks, forming a comprehensive safety protection system.

Significant Performance Advantages

In terms of performance, these hydrogen-powered two-wheelers have outstanding advantages: their driving range can reach 100 kilometers; they support 10-second rapid hydrogen swapping, making energy replenishment efficient and convenient; the fuel cell system can achieve an energy density of more than 500 Wh/kg, far higher than that of conventional lithium batteries; and the fuel cell can achieve more than 5,000 cycles over its life cycle, significantly outperforming the cycle life of lithium batteries, which is approximately 1,200 cycles. In addition, the vehicles have stable low-temperature operating performance, which can effectively support normal operations under the severe winter weather conditions in Yiwu County.

Strong Hydrogen Energy Industry Foundation

A relevant official from the Yiwu County Development and Reform Commission said that the county has completed construction of 2 integrated hydrogen production and refueling stations, with another 2 under construction. Hundreds of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks have been put into operation within the county, and 7 hydrogen fuel cell buses have been put into operation in the county seat, forming the largest hydrogen transportation application scenario in Xinjiang.

The hydrogen fuel cell shared two-wheeler project is an important livelihood and industrial integration project in which Yiwu County deepens its presence across the entire hydrogen energy industry chain and implements the national "dual carbon" strategy. Relying on locally mature integrated "hydrogen production and refueling" facilities and the stable supply advantages of green hydrogen and industrial by-product hydrogen, the project has successfully connected the complete industry chain of "hydrogen production — hydrogen storage — hydrogen swapping — civilian mobility," and will effectively expand civilian hydrogen energy application scenarios, activate the local hydrogen energy consumer market, and further extend and improve the county's hydrogen energy industry system.

Industry Development Background

In 2023, Hami City became one of the first 4 hydrogen energy industry demonstration zones in Xinjiang, undertaking demonstration tasks such as hydrogen refueling station construction and fuel cell vehicle promotion. In March 2025, Hami City was approved to join the national fuel cell vehicle demonstration application city clusters and was incorporated into the Zhengzhou city cluster and the Guangdong city cluster, respectively, bringing its hydrogen energy industry development into the national demonstration ranks.
