[SMM Tin Futures Brief Comment: Hawkish Macro Sentiment Pressures the Most-Traded SHFE Tin Contract, Whose Center Loosens]

August 31, 2026 Tin Daily Commentary

The most-traded SHFE tin contract moved lower today under pressure from bearish macro sentiment. It opened lower at 423,850 yuan/mt in early trading, dipped to a low of 414,600 yuan/mt, then consolidated and closed at 419,000 yuan/mt in the afternoon, down 0.71% from the previous trading day's settlement price. During the day, capital showed a position-reducing trend; open interest decreased by 1,656 lots to 41,104 lots. On the LME side, the London Metal Exchange (LME) was closed today for the UK Summer Bank Holiday, providing no market guidance.

Macro front:

(1) Fed Chairman Warsh said publicly that inflation data had not shown significant trend improvement and that the Fed's primary focus should remain price stability. He stressed that the Fed must be confident that underlying inflation was moving toward its target; otherwise, there was still work to do (room for rate hikes), and noted that current financial conditions could hardly be described as "restrictive." In response to this hawkish stance, market pricing showed that the probability of a Fed rate hike in September had exceeded that of keeping rates unchanged, and expectations of tighter overseas macro liquidity weighed on commodities.

(2) China's manufacturing PMI for August came in at 49.8%, up 0.6 percentage point MoM, indicating that overall business conditions improved somewhat. By enterprise size, the PMI for large enterprises rose to 50.6% (back above the threshold), while those for medium-sized and small enterprises were 49.4% and 47.9%, respectively, showing a mild structural recovery in China's manufacturing sector led by large enterprises.

In the spot market, overall trading was relatively active today. Most traders actively quoted prices, but actual transactions were mainly spot orders and small orders. Overall, end-use demand is currently in a "wait-and-see transition period" before entering the traditional peak season. On one hand, some enterprises have already completed a small amount of advance restocking of raw materials in the previous two weeks and are not in a hurry to purchase in large volumes. On the other hand, with the official start of September just ahead, downstream buyers are generally watching whether futures prices will soften further and waiting for concrete signals of a substantive release in end-use demand.

Overall, the tin market is currently constrained by both softening macro sentiment and a transitional phase in fundamentals. On the macro front, the Fed's return to a hawkish tone significantly weakened previous easing expectations, and capital sentiment turned cautious. On the industrial front, China is in a quiet period before the "September peak season," with downstream buyers holding a strong wait-and-see mentality of "buying on dips rather than rallies and waiting for lower prices." The spot market has not yet seen large-scale concentrated restocking to support futures prices. The price center of the most-traded SHFE tin contract is expected to shift lower in a stepwise manner in the short term, accompanied by wild swings.
