[SMM Survey: From Four-Wheel Electric Drive to Two-Wheeler Frames, Magnesium Alloy End-Use Applications in Transportation Accelerate Implementation] Since 2026, breakthroughs in processes such as semi-solid die-casting, coupled with a pullback in the magnesium-to-aluminum price ratio, have driven the accelerated penetration of magnesium alloy automotive die-cast parts from small non-load-bearing components to core structural parts such as electric drive housings and rear floor panels. The application achievements of four major enterprises have been intensively implemented.

Recently, magnesium alloys have achieved consecutive breakthroughs in end-use applications within the transportation sector. On August 19, Wuling Industries, a subsidiary of the group, collaborated with Chongqing University at its Chongqing base to successfully develop a high-performance magnesium alloy e-drive housing, achieving an overall product weight reduction of 30%. This marks a new breakthrough for magnesium alloys in the core powertrain components of NEVs. Meanwhile, an e-bike equipped with a magnesium alloy integrated frame was unveiled, with the entire vehicle weighing only 26.5 kg. From four-wheel e-drive housings to two-wheeler vehicle frames, magnesium alloys are rapidly covering the lightweighting demands of all transportation scenarios, and the pace of the "magnesium replaces aluminum" application continues to accelerate.

In the automotive sector, Wuling Industries and Chongqing University have established an industry-academia-research-application collaborative innovation model. They are conducting systematic research to address common technical pain points of magnesium alloy e-drive housings in the industry, such as high-temperature creep and susceptibility to corrosion. By integrating upstream and downstream resources of the industry chain, they are advancing integrated technology R&D spanning "material design — product structure optimization — innovative pouring and exhaust systems for complex molds — application of semi-solid injection molding." The project selected the e-drive's front and rear end covers for full-process validation of magnesium alloy semi-solid die-casting. A multi-element micro-alloyed, corrosion-resistant and creep-resistant magnesium alloy was designed, balancing room-temperature strength and ductility, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, and semi-solid forming liquidity. In the forming stage, 850t and 1650t semi-solid equipment were precisely matched. For the front end cover, an innovative center gating mode was adopted to shorten the filling process. Combined with filling and solidification simulation, non-destructive testing, and metallographic detection, a closed-loop optimization methodology was established: "melt temperature selection — semi-solid forming — defect control — performance determination." The final product achieved an overall weight reduction of 30%, effectively lowering the e-drive assembly's weight and increasing the vehicle's driving range, while also optimizing the system's modal and NVH performance, providing a crucial technical pathway to break through the bottleneck of vehicle lightweighting.

In the two-wheeler sector, an e-bike recently disclosed by China Magnesium Network features a magnesium alloy integrated frame. The entire vehicle weighs only 26.5 kg, with dimensions of 1835×700×1090 mm and a wheelbase of 1140 mm. Its mechanical configuration is equipped with Shimano BL-MT200 series front and rear brakes, 180 mm brake discs, lockable oil-spring front suspension, Shimano SL-M315-8R shift lever and RD-TX800/8-speed rear derailleur, a KMC/Z6 chain, and 27.5-inch CST tires. On the electronic control side, it is equipped with a 48V 9Ah LMFP battery, a 300W mid-drive motor (700W peak output), and a 4.5-inch VA color display instrument, and supports driving lights/low beam/horn, tail lights, and customizable ambient lights. At the intelligent connectivity level, it supports APP/4G/BeiDou. Driven by the new national standard's "weight restriction for quality improvement" and the "plastic restriction order," the magnesium alloy integrated frame, with advantages such as light weight, high strength, shock absorption, noise reduction, and electromagnetic shielding, is becoming the core material solution for the lightweight upgrade of electric two-wheelers.

With a density only about two-thirds that of aluminum alloy and one-quarter that of steel, magnesium alloy offers a natural advantage in the lightweighting of transportation equipment. As processes like semi-solid die-casting and integrated molding become increasingly mature, coupled with the magnesium-aluminum price ratio pulling back to a historical low, magnesium alloys are accelerating their penetration from traditional small parts like steering wheels and seat brackets to medium and large core structural components such as e-drive housings, CCBs, and rear floor panels. Their application is also expanding from NEVs to multiple end-user scenarios, including electric two-wheelers and humanoid robots. The simultaneous implementation of the automotive e-drive housing and the two-wheeler integrated frame further confirms that magnesium alloys have entered a period of full-scenario expansion, providing sustained core material support for the future low-carbon and lightweight upgrade of the transportation sector.

[SMM Magnesium Market Analysis: Prices Rose Before Falling Below the Year's Low, the Real Logic Behind Magnesium Plants' "On-and-Off" Operations] The first and second halves of the month presented contrasting patterns, one hot and one cold, one joyful and one sorrowful, with market sentiment rapidly shifting from euphoria to a freezing point in just thirty days. At the start of the month, coal prices shot up, igniting the market, as cost support combined with speculative capital inflows drove magnesium prices sharply higher, briefly suggesting that a new upward cycle had begun. However, the heavy drag from fundamentals soon emerged, and the rally, lacking support from real demand, proved unsustainable. Magnesium prices then drifted lower, ultimately falling below the year's low, with 9990 primary magnesium ingot prices dipping to 156,500 yuan/mt. The monthly trend rose before falling, creating a stark contrast.

Magnesium Prices Consolidate Near Bottom: Producers Sell at Low Prices to Promote Shipments, Downstream Purchases Cautiously on Rigid Demand [SMM Magnesium Weekly Review]
[SMM Magnesium Weekly Review: Magnesium Prices Consolidate to Seek Bottom; Producers Sell at Low Prices to Promote Shipments, Downstream Purchases Cautiously on Rigid Demand] This week, the magnesium market maintained a weak supply-demand pattern. Supply side, magnesium ingot smelters showed active willingness to sell, with some offering low-price promotions to ease inventory pressure, though overall sentiment to hold prices firm persisted. Magnesium alloy enterprises faced high inventory levels, with several planning to initiate large-scale production cuts next month. Demand side, foreign trade deliveries largely concluded, while domestic trade maintained only rigid restocking. Downstream acceptance of current prices remained low, with a clear rush to buy amid continuous price rise and hold back amid price downturn mentality. Weakness in end-user automotive demand further dragged down magnesium alloy consumption. Overall, the market showed a strong supply and weak demand pattern, consolidating to seek bottom.
