[SMM Survey: Magnesium/Aluminum Price Ratio at 0.72 Window Period, Automakers Accelerate "Magnesium Substituting Aluminum" Lightweighting Layout] Since 2026, breakthroughs in semi-solid die-casting and other processes coupled with a pullback in the magnesium/aluminum price ratio have driven magnesium alloy automotive die castings to accelerate penetration from non-load-bearing small parts to core structural parts such as electric drive housings and rear floors, with application achievements from the four major enterprises being intensively implemented.

Since 2026, breakthroughs in processes such as semi-solid die-casting, coupled with a pullback in the magnesium-to-aluminum price ratio, have accelerated the penetration of magnesium alloy automotive die-castings from small non-load-bearing parts to core structural components such as electric drive housings and rear floors. Application achievements from four large enterprises have been intensively realized.

The world's first semi-solid magnesium alloy instrument panel crossbeam (CCB) entered mass production, supporting Seres' AITO car models. Produced using semi-solid die-casting, it weighs less than half of a traditional steel counterpart, with a stable daily output of 1,000 units. Meanwhile, Changan jointly trial-produced an integrated magnesium alloy rear floor die-casting with a 67% yield rate, setting a new industry record, achieving a weight reduction of over 20% compared to aluminum parts.

Guangdong Hongtu and SAIC-GM-Wuling successfully trial-produced a magnesium alloy electric drive housing die-casting, using the self-developed JDM1c heat-resistant die-casting magnesium alloy, formed on a 4000T ultra-large die-casting machine. The housing weighs 11.28 kg, achieving a 35.73% weight reduction compared to the aluminum alloy solution, and is expected to be installed in vehicles by year-end. Previously, the ultra-large magnesium alloy electric drive housing jointly developed with Changan also achieved a 23% weight reduction.

Sinyuan ZM secured 4.094 billion yuan in designated orders for magnesium alloy powertrain housings within one year, approximately ten times its 2024 revenue. The largest single order was for Xiaomi Auto's die-casting project, expected to commence mass production in Q3 2026, with a four-year scale of 2.021 billion yuan. The products use high-pressure die-casting and cover medium to large die-cast parts such as new energy vehicle powertrain housings and display system components. Clients include BMW, Audi, Zeekr, and XPeng.

Chenzhi Lightweight and Changan Auto established a joint project team in July, focusing on the mass production of large auto body die-castings, including magnesium alloy electric drive housings, rear floors, and rear door inner panels. They are building an integrated smart manufacturing base that encompasses R&D, trial production, manufacturing, and validation. Previously, they signed a joint development agreement with Avatr covering eight product areas, including CCB and tailgates, using semi-solid die-casting, to promote magnesium alloy penetration from non-load-bearing parts to core structural components.

Magnesium alloy automotive die-castings are upgrading from small parts such as steering wheels and seat brackets to medium and large core structural components including electric drive housings, CCBs, and rear floors, achieving weight reductions generally ranging from 20% to 35%. The maturity of semi-solid die-casting and integrated die-casting processes, combined with the pullback of the magnesium-to-aluminum price ratio to 0.72, has shifted magnesium alloy from an optional to a mandatory lightweight solution. Based on a usage of 50 kg per vehicle, the incremental demand for magnesium alloy in the automotive sector could reach a million-ton scale.

Yian Tech's Magnesium Revenue Surges 64.41% in H1 2026, Driving Company Growth
【SMM Magnesium Flash】On September 7th, Yian Technology disclosed its investor relations activity records. In the first half of 2026, the company's magnesium product revenue reached 376.5 million yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 64.41%. The magnesium-aluminum alloy business has become a new growth point for the company. Through technological transformation, the company's equipment capacity can achieve magnesium-aluminum conversion, and the overall operating rate is good. Meanwhile, the supplementary materials for the registration application of magnesium bone screws have been submitted, and approval is expected to be completed within 3 to 6 months. With the continuous increase in magnesium product volume and the implementation of medical magnesium alloy registration, the magnesium business is expected to become an important support for the company's performance recovery.

Deli Tech and Ideal Auto Roll Out Lightweight Magnesium Alloy Rear Floor, Aiding EV Efficiency
【SMM Magnesium Flash】Recently, the magnesium alloy one-piece die-casting rear floor sample jointly promoted by Deli Technology and Ideal Automobile was officially rolled off the production line. The project completed mold development, equipment debugging, and process verification in just three months, relying on the Bühler 9200T die-casting equipment to successfully achieve high-quality molding of large thin-walled magnesium alloy components. Magnesium alloy has a density of only two-thirds that of aluminum alloy and one-quarter that of steel, and the weight reduction effect can be translated into longer endurance and lower energy consumption. The roll-off of this sample marks the transition of large-scale magnesium alloy one-piece die-casting from the laboratory to the mass production workshop, which is expected to accelerate the lightweight process of new energy vehicles.

Magnesium Prices Rise Amid Higher Costs, But Demand Weakness Limits Momentum
【SMM Weekly Magnesium Review】This week, the mainstream offer for 9990 magnesium ingots in major production regions stands at RMB 16,050-16,150/ton, up RMB 300/ton week-on-week, with FOB offers at USD 2,280-2,380/ton and an average price of USD 2,330/ton. Driven by rising costs of coal and ferrosilicon, magnesium ingot prices climbed during the week, coupled with some restocking purchases at higher prices in foreign trade; however, the overall market sees strong supply against weak demand, transactions at high prices lack momentum, and prices have already shown signs of decline in the later period. Meanwhile, there is no substantial recovery in overseas demand, with the market mostly seeing tentative inquiries, limited actual transaction volumes and obvious price suppression from buyers, keeping trading activity muted. Downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloys passively follow the price hike of magnesium ingots; terminal demand for magnesium powder remains sluggish, with some enterprises cutting production or suspending operations, exports restricted, and inventories rising to some extent. Spot inventories of magnesium alloys are abundant, with fierce competition among peers, die-casting enterprises face insufficient orders leading to declining operating rates, and processing fees remain under continuous pressure. In the short term, the support from costs and weak demand are locked in a game, the upward momentum of magnesium prices lacks follow-up, and the market may return to range-bound movement; subsequent focus will be placed on the release of domestic and foreign orders.
