[SMM Coking Coal and Coke Daily Brief]

Coking Coal Market:

Linfen low-sulphur coking coal was quoted at 2,020 yuan/mt.

For coking coal, safety checks remain stringent, and production resumptions at coal mines are progressing slowly. However, affected by wait-and-see sentiment, downstream purchases are cautious, mainly focused on purchasing as needed and digesting inventories. Coal enterprises have few transactions, and auction transactions have been unstable. In the short term, some high-priced coal types still have room for price cuts.

Coke Market:

The nationwide average price of dry-quenched quasi-first-grade metallurgical coke was 2,035 yuan/mt.

In terms of supply, the decline in coke prices has led to losses for some coke enterprises, which have slightly cut production. Moreover, coke enterprises are currently facing shipment obstacles, and their in-plant coke inventories are gradually building up. Demand side, end-use demand is underperforming, and steel mills continue to suffer losses, leading to increasing blast furnace maintenance. Their rigid demand for coke is weakening, with purchases mainly based on need, and there is a strong desire to bargain down coke prices. In summary, the coke market is likely to remain in the doldrums in the near term, and the second round of coke price cuts is about to take effect. [SMM Steel]

[SMM Sheets & Plates Daily Comment] HRC futures surged alongside costs, with production still expected to edge down
Today, HRC futures prices strengthened significantly, with the most-traded contract closing at 3,340, up 1.49% intraday. In the spot market, prices increased by 30-50 yuan/mt overall, while intraday transactions were average; as futures rallied too fast, most traders adopted a wait-and-see attitude, and downstream buyers showed relatively low acceptance of high prices. On the fundamentals side, from the end of August to September, maintenance schedules for hot rolling have increased notably. This week, the impact from maintenance for hot rolling is expected to continue increasing, with production edging down. On the demand side, downstream buyers' willingness for concentrated purchases was not high, with most still in off-season sentiment, making it difficult to see significant improvement; in the short term, the pattern of weak supply and demand persists. However, on the cost side, with growth in hot metal, coupled with supply tightening due to Mongolian and Shanxi coal, and the expected first-round increase of coke, coking coal and coke led the gains, boosting market sentiment and driving finished steel prices higher. In summary, short-term HRC prices are expected to follow costs and hold up well.
