[ SMM Daily Review of Coking Coal and Coke ]

Coking Coal Market:

Linfen low-sulphur coking coal was quoted at 2,400 yuan/mt.

On the coking coal side, some coal mines have gradually resumed production recently, but safety supervision remains strict, severely limiting production release. Supply of coking coal is tight, high-quality resources have been further pushed up, market sentiment is fervent, and some coal types are still expected to see further price adjustments. In the short term, the coking coal market may consolidate on a strong note.

Coke Market:

The nationwide average price of quasi-first-grade metallurgical coke (coke dry quenching) was 1,980 yuan/mt.

Market news: Mainstream steel mills in Shandong and Hebei raised wet quenching coke by 50 yuan/mt and coke dry quenching by 55 yuan/mt, effective at midnight on August 24, 2026, marking the official implementation of the first round of coke price increase. In addition, some steel mills in certain regions plan to raise wet quenching coke by 100 yuan/mt and coke dry quenching by 110 yuan/mt, effective at midnight on August 26, 2026. On the supply side, coke enterprises are suffering severe losses, leading to a noticeable contraction in coke supply. With losses widening, further production cuts are expected to intensify, and coke supply may continue to tighten. On the demand side, blast furnace maintenance at steel mills has largely ended, with those furnaces entering the production resumption stage, increasing rigid demand for coke. Steel mills' procurement enthusiasm has risen significantly, with some mills purchasing at premiums and expediting deliveries. In summary, coke's cost support has strengthened markedly, and the demand side remains robust. In the short term, the coke market will hold up well, and the second round of price increase is about to be implemented.[SMM Steel]

Today, HRC futures prices strengthened significantly, with the most-traded contract closing at 3,340, up 1.49% intraday. In the spot market, prices increased by 30-50 yuan/mt overall, while intraday transactions were average; as futures rallied too fast, most traders adopted a wait-and-see attitude, and downstream buyers showed relatively low acceptance of high prices. On the fundamentals side, from the end of August to September, maintenance schedules for hot rolling have increased notably. This week, the impact from maintenance for hot rolling is expected to continue increasing, with production edging down. On the demand side, downstream buyers' willingness for concentrated purchases was not high, with most still in off-season sentiment, making it difficult to see significant improvement; in the short term, the pattern of weak supply and demand persists. However, on the cost side, with growth in hot metal, coupled with supply tightening due to Mongolian and Shanxi coal, and the expected first-round increase of coke, coking coal and coke led the gains, boosting market sentiment and driving finished steel prices higher. In summary, short-term HRC prices are expected to follow costs and hold up well.
