In 2026, magnesium alloy market demand entered a rapid growth cycle. Applications in NEV lightweighting, high-end equipment, and high performance transportation equipment continued to expand. The industry ushered in a golden window of supply-demand structure improvement and accelerated technology commercialization, with upstream and downstream industry chain players speeding up coordinated deployment.

On April 2, Bojun Technology and LK Group held a strategic cooperation signing ceremony in Kunshan, Jiangsu, launching in-depth collaboration in magnesium alloy forming. As a core supporting enterprise for NEVs, Bojun Technology had previously introduced LK's large die-casting units, achieving mass production of multiple integrated die-casting products. This cooperation further expanded investment in 10kt-class and large-tonnage intelligent die-casting units equipped with high-precision machining equipment, and implemented TPI magnesium alloy semi-solid thixoforming technology, focusing on overcoming forming challenges for complex thick-walled components such as NEV auto body structural parts, electric drive assemblies, and robot structural parts, filling the gap in high-end magnesium alloy manufacturing capacity, and further strengthening core competitiveness in lightweighting.

Zhangxue Motorcycles extensively applied magnesium alloy materials in international racing events, leveraging lightweighting advantages to break the long-standing monopoly of international brands. With a density of only 2/3 that of aluminum and 1/4 that of steel, magnesium alloy achieved approximately 30% weight reduction in components, helping race motorcycles significantly reduce curb weight and improve handling and cornering performance. Meanwhile, the excellent vibration damping and heat dissipation properties of magnesium alloy, combined with anti-creep formulation and forging process improvements, effectively addressed traditional application pain points, achieving large-scale application in the high performance motorcycle sector and providing a strong demonstration for magnesium alloy's expansion into the high-end transportation equipment market. Zhangxue Motorcycles won the championship at the WSBK Portugal round, with the key being the large-scale application of magnesium alloy hard components, validating the material's value in racing. Its 820RR-RS race motorcycle, powered by an 819cc triple-cylinder engine, featured magnesium alloy pistons (with DLC coating and oil cooling optimization to address heat and corrosion resistance), magnesium alloy cylinder head covers, oil pans, and engine side covers, bringing the engine dry weight to only 52 kg, approximately 17 kg lighter than comparable models. Combined with titanium alloy connecting rods, it achieved high-rev response at 15,250 rpm. The chassis and running gear were equipped with a forged magnesium alloy rear swingarm (exclusive to the RS track version, with equivalent rigidity and 30% weight reduction), a magnesium alloy subframe (beneath the seat, weighing 2.5 kg), and magnesium alloy wheel hubs (40% lighter than aluminum alloy), significantly reducing unsprung mass and rotational inertia. Auto body accessories used magnesium alloy headlight/turn signal brackets and instrument brackets, with cumulative weight reduction from small components being significant. These hard components addressed high-temperature creep and corrosion pain points, supporting the ultimate lightweighting and handling of the entire vehicle, and driving accelerated penetration of magnesium alloy in the high-end transportation equipment sector.

Leveraging China's abundant magnesium resource reserves and mature industry support, combined with sustained volume growth in new energy and emerging equipment demand, magnesium alloy application scenarios continued to broaden. Strong alliances among enterprises drove technology and capacity upgrades, and the industry was entering a new phase of large-scale commercialization and high-quality development, with the value of lightweighting as a core material continuing to gain prominence.

Chrome Shines as One of Two Commodities with Positive Growth in May's Mining Output - South Africa
[SMM Express] South Africa's mining production remained under pressure in May 2026 as weaker performances across key bulk commodities weighed on total output. Against this backdrop, chrome stood out as one of only two major commodities to record positive year-on-year production growth, highlighting its continued resilience amid a broader industry slowdown. Key reads from the disclosures: (i) Relative outperformance: Chrome was among only two commodities to post positive production growth in May, outperforming most of South Africa's mining sector. (ii) Structural demand support: Continued demand from China's stainless steel industry and ferrochrome sector remains supportive of chrome production. (iii) Industry resilience: Chrome producers have continued to expand output despite weaker mining conditions affecting several other commodities. (iv) Strategic importance: Chrome's stronger production performance further reinforces its role as one of South Africa's most resilient mining commodities and an increasingly important contributor to export earnings. Watchlist. Although chrome continues to outperform the broader mining sector, production momentum will depend on sustained Chinese demand, logistics efficiency across rail and ports, reliable power supply, and the pace of new UG2 chrome recovery capacity additions. Continued weakness in South Africa's overall mining industry could also weigh indirectly on future investment and operational activity.

[Sibanye-Stillwater Targets 75% Chrome Output Growth by 2033]
[SMM Express] Sibanye-Stillwater's strategy update outlined an ambitious chrome growth path, targeting a sustained 2.3 Mt/y output through 2033 (a 75% increase from the 1.0 Mt/y baseline of 2016). The trajectory would lift the group materially above its current 10% share of South African chrome output and 5% of global supply, with the Glencore Merafe Chrome Venture agreement signed in 2025 providing the operational levers. Key reads from the disclosures: (i) Volume growth: Output is targeted to reach 2.3 Mt/y through expanded UG2 chrome recovery capacity. (ii) Revenue contribution: Chrome continues to strengthen earnings and support operational resilience. (iii) Glencore Merafe Chrome Venture agreement: The 2025 agreement enhances operational synergies and fine-chrome processing capabilities. (iv) Market backdrop: Tightening global supply-demand fundamentals continue to support South African chrome producers. Watchlist. Capital intensity of UG2 expansion, Eskom power availability for downstream smelting, and execution of fine-chrome technology transfer within the agreed framework will determine delivery. The first reporting cycle under the new chrome management agreement is the next milestone.
