Total exports of both unworked and worked gallium from China surged again in July [SMM Data]

Published: Aug 25, 2025 09:20

Customs data showed that China's exports of both forged and unforged gallium reached 9.01 mt in July 2025, up significantly MoM from around 4.26 mt in June. It is understood that the primary destination for these exports remains Europe. Market participants generally still believe that although the volume of gallium product exports has increased, export controls remain stringent, and China is confident and orderly in managing the flow and resources of gallium product exports.

[SMM Chromium Flash] South Africa's July Ferrochrome Exports Fall 20.8% MoM as Global Glut Risk Weighs on China Demand
South Africa's high-carbon ferrochrome exports fell to 97,656 mt in July 2026, down 20.8% month-on-month from June's 123,310 mt, a sharper contraction than June's flat performance against May. China, the top destination, pulled back 27.2% to 28,337 mt, a move that lines up with Merafe Resources' August 11 half-year results flagging a potential H2 2026 ferrochrome glut driven by rising Chinese domestic output and weak stainless steel demand. Japan bucked the trend, rising 31.8% to 23,716 mt to overtake Italy and South Korea as the second-largest destination, with the United States also up 29.0% to 11,415 mt. The broader decline reflects supply constraints as much as demand: the Wonderkop and Boshoek smelters only began restarting in late June following the finalized 62c/kWh Eskom tariff deal, leaving July as effectively the first month any incremental output could reach the export market.

Wafer and solar cell prices continue to edge down, while glass production cuts support price increases [SMM Weekly Review]
[SMM Weekly Review: Wafer and Solar Cell Prices Continue to Edge Down, Glass Production Cuts Support Price Increases] This week, the overall solar cell market remained subdued, with prices across all sizes generally edging down. Price divergence between upstream and downstream intensified, coupled with early signs of inventory buildup in futures, pushing the market into a phase of consolidation on a subdued note amid tug-of-war dynamics. This week, TOPCon prices across all sizes declined in tandem, with the overall market under pressure. The 210R price range was adjusted to 0.298-0.306 Yuan/W, 183 to 0.298-0.305 Yuan/W, and 210N down to 0.295-0.301 Yuan/W. Currently, mainstream quotations from solar cell plants are concentrated at 0.3-0.31 Yuan/W, but downstream module manufacturers are strongly pushing for lower prices, with procurement expectations continuing to decline and significant resistance to high-price transactions in the market. At this stage, orders below 0.3 Yuan/W generally face cash loss pressure, and solar cell plants are reluctant to take orders. The tug-of-war between upstream and downstream is evident, with overall sluggish transactions. Prices are expected to maintain a subdued consolidation pattern in the short term.
