India sends geologists to Zambia to explore copper and cobalt deposits

The Indian government has recently dispatched a team of geological experts to Zambia to explore copper and cobalt resources—an important step in New Delhi’s efforts to secure critical minerals and advance its energy transition strategy. According to two Indian government sources, the Zambian government has allocated approximately 9,000 square kilometers of land for India to conduct a three-year exploration program. Most of the laboratory analysis related to this project will be carried out in India, while the exploration team is expected to make multiple visits to Zambia throughout the project duration. Once the mineral potential has been assessed, the Indian government plans to apply for a mining lease from the Zambian authorities and may also invite Indian private-sector companies to participate in the development. This cooperation is part of India’s broader effort to strengthen mineral resource ties with several African nations. India is also in talks with the Democratic Republic of Congo to sign a preliminary agreement aimed at securing stable supplies of copper and cobalt. In addition, the country is actively pursuing similar opportunities in Australia and Latin America.
