SMM, September 3:
Data summary: As of Thursday, September 3, SMM national mainstream copper inventories across China fell 20,600 mt WoW to 88,900 mt, with total inventories down 51,700 mt from 140,600 mt in the same period last year.
Specifically, Shanghai saw limited arrivals of both imported and domestic cargoes. Coupled with a pullback in copper prices and lower premiums, downstream purchases recovered, leading to significant destocking. Jiangsu saw inventory buildup due to arrivals from smelters. In Guangdong, as some smelter cargoes shifted to exports and some were affected by production cuts, shipments to Guangdong continued to decline, with inventories hitting a new YTD low.
Looking ahead, domestic and imported supply arrivals are expected to remain generally stable in the near term, with supply marginally loosening. On the demand side, high copper prices still exert some restraint on demand, but as the traditional peak season approaches, rigid demand support has improved somewhat. Based on the overall supply-demand fundamentals, national copper social inventories are expected to continue a slight destocking trend next week.
