According to SMM survey data, the operating rate of secondary copper rods was 16.17% last week (surveyed enterprises: 15, capacity: 1.59 million mt/year), up 0.48 percentage points WoW. Last week, the average price spread between copper cathode rod and copper scrap rod was 1,478 yuan/mt, up 493 yuan/mt from 985 yuan/mt two weeks ago. The average discount against futures contract for Jiangxi secondary copper rods was 845 yuan/mt last week, down 430 yuan/mt WoW.

After copper prices rose, the price spread between copper cathode rod and copper scrap rod quickly widened, and the economic benefits of secondary copper rods reappeared. However, secondary copper rod plants reported slow sales in the first half of the week. In the latter half, as copper prices continued to rise, wire and cable companies placed orders only for pre-holiday restocking. Overall, the rapid increase in copper prices severely suppressed the restocking sentiment of end-use wire and cable customers. With smelters still lacking ore, it is expected that copper anode processing fees in October will remain flat with September at 400 yuan/mt. Therefore, with secondary copper rod prices being 400-500 yuan/mt lower than copper anodes, secondary copper rod plants preferred to produce copper anodes. Although the supply of copper scrap slightly improved last week, the operating rate of secondary copper rods did not see significant growth.

Looking ahead to this week, some secondary copper rod plants have completed pre-holiday raw material restocking. Some plants indicated that if raw material procurement is insufficient, they may shut down for 2-3 days during the long holiday and resume production once copper scrap suppliers start shipping again.

[SMM Brass Rod Flash] According to SMM data, the comprehensive operating rate of copper rod enterprises in September was 42.37%, down 0.27 percentage points MoM and down 2.73 percentage points YoY. High copper prices combined with tight supply of recycled brass raw materials kept industry demand under pressure.

Pre-holiday Trading Quiet on Both Sides, Spot Premiums Continue to Pull Back [SMM Shanghai Spot Copper]
[SMM Shanghai spot copper] Looking ahead to the post-holiday period, on September 30, SMM recorded social inventory in Shanghai at 49,200 mt, down 2,000 mt WoW; social inventory in Jiangsu stood at 12,700 mt, down 2,600 mt WoW. Before the holiday, downstream processing enterprises had largely completed holiday stockpiling and arranged cargo pick-up schedules with suppliers in advance for the holiday period. On the supply side, arrivals of imported copper have remained limited recently, and smelter shipments have largely matched downstream pick-up demand, keeping the overall market in a tight balance. Post-holiday, as holiday stockpiles are consumed, downstream processing enterprises may have some restocking demand, but finished product inventories are expected to accumulate during the holiday, and actual purchasing intensity will still depend on whether new orders post-holiday can see a significant pickup. Buyers and sellers are expected to remain in a deadlock over high premiums after the holiday, and spot premiums are likely to stay high in the short term. Going forward, close attention should be paid to the extent of social inventory accumulation during the holiday, the recovery of downstream orders after the holiday, and the impact of changes in the backwardation spread between futures contracts on spot premiums.
