Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator has announced the result of Canada’s biggest energy storage bidding result, selecting nearly 1.8GW of projects through a Request for Proposals (RFP).

Last week, the Ontario government announced the evaluation of Proposals for the Long-Term 1 RFP and its final bidding result, which includes 10 battery storage system proponents. Their total contact capacity is about 1.8 GWh, covering projects ranging from 9.49MW to 390MW with at least four consecutive hours.

A recent forecast by the IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator, Ontario) predicts a significant rise in Ontario's electricity demand – a 60% increase over the next 25 years. Based on the higher requirement for energy sustainability in the future, the Ontario government and IESO launched this plan. Most of these selected projects have identified their specific locations and builders, but the equipment providers have yet to be identified.

As a resource-rich and less densely populated developed country, Canada has better prospects for developing sustainable energy sources. SMM believes that Canada will continue to maintain its position as the country with a high level of energy sustainability in the Americas region, driven by relevant tenders and policies.
