In April 2023, China's photovoltaic glass export volume was 266,800 mt, a month-on-month drop of 6.94% and a year-on-year increase of 4.56%; from January to April 2023, the cumulative export volume of photovoltaic glass was 1.0566 million mt, a year-on-year increase of 68.28%. The exports to South Korea were the highest with 61,200 mt, down 4.75% from the previous month.

Compared with March, exports to Vietnam decreased by 4.75% month-on-month to 61,200 mt, accounting for 22.94% of the total export volume; exports to Thailand were 34,400 mt, accounting for 12.89% of the total export volume, an increase of 10,500 mt from the previous month to rank second; those to India were 27,800 mt, accounting for 10.40% of the total export volume, and the export volume decreased by 29.91% from the previous month; exports to Cambodia were 19,300 mt, accounting for 7.23% of the total export volume, a decrease of 15.70% from the previous month. Exports to the US increased by 1,631% month-on-month to 19,300 mt, accounting for 7.22% of the total export volume, returning to the top five buyers.

SMM analysed that the reason for the weakening of photovoltaic glass exports in April was that demand for Chinese photovoltaic glass from some Southeast Asian countries strengthened driven by the government. Entering April, the demand for overseas distributed installed capacity slightly decreased, and the inventory was high. At present, the main focus is to digest the existing inventory, and the enthusiasm for purchasing has weakened.

【SMM Analysis】Spot Price Floors Move Lower as Deep Off-Peak Hours Expand, Solar-Storage Signals Emerge in Shandong
Shandong has recently moved to adjust its spot-market price floors, industrial and commercial time-of-use tariffs, and operating rules for energy storage co-located with renewable energy stations. Although the three policies target differently, they all address the same challenge. The policies do not mark a return to mandatory storage requirements, but they do increase the downside price exposure of non-mechanism PV volumes and strengthen the need to shift electricity across time.
