SHANGHAI, May 23 (SMM) - Recently, with its advanced solutions in the field of electrical safety, CATL was awarded the UNECE R100.03 power battery system certificate by the German Ministry of Transport, which is the first battery company in the world to be granted access to the new version of the regulation since its release, establishing an excellent reputation and corporate presence in the industry. This is also another milestone for CATL in its global footprint after its first overseas factory, the Thuringia factory in Germany, was granted the 8GWh cell production license in April this year. It is reported that the German plant, with a total investment of 1.8 billion euros and a planned capacity of 14GWh, is currently making the final push for the first batch of cells to come off the production line at the end of the year, marking the first overseas base for Chinese battery companies to go into production, facilitating Europe's full electrification and energy transition.

On July 2 2021, the European Economic Commission published the amendments to the 03 series of R100 regulation on batteries for electric vehicles ("UN ECE R100.03"), which came into force on the date of publication. And since September 1 2023, it is required that all power battery systems exported to EU member states shall be certified. The main changes to the 03 series of regulations are as follows.

High voltage safety of the whole vehicle:

  1. Waterproof protection requirements added
  2. Battery system failure and low electric quantity alarm requirements added

Battery system safety:

  1. Modifications to the test qualification criteria: a) no electrolyte leakage (visual inspection); b) no rupture (only for high voltage PRESS systems); c) no venting (new, for PRESSs other than open traction batteries); d) no fire breaking out; e) no explosion; f) insulation internal resistance ≥ 100 Ω/V
  2. For vibration, simulated impact, crush, fire, short circuit and thermal shock cycle tests, the SOC requirement has been revised from no less than 50% to no less than 95%
  3. Modification to the current for the overcharge protection test: from 1/3C to the maximum charge current allowed for the battery
  4. Overcurrent test added
  5. Requirements for REESS system low temperature protection, gas emission management, warnings of operational faults in the vehicle control system that manages the safe operation of REESS, REESS system temperature management alarms as well as heat transfer protection and alarm strategy documentation added
