SHANGHAI, May 19 (SMM) - US Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, said on Wednesday (May 18) local time that she advocated the abolition of some punitive tariffs on China. Some tariffs imposed on China by the Trump government are harming the interests of US consumers and businesses, and these tariffs have no strategic significance now. Yellen said at a press conference before the meeting of the G7 summit and central bank governors: “...to me, seem as though they imposed more harm on consumers and businesses.” Yellen added that some Trump-era tariffs "aren't very strategic in the sense of addressing real issues we have with China.” However, some media quoted sources as saying that US Trade Representative Tai preferred to keep and impose tariffs to formulate a more strategic trade plan with China and protect US employment and market.
