Sharp Cut in Silicon Production May Drive up Polysilicon Prices

Development and Reform Commission announced on September 11 that the average Month output of local industrial silicon companies should not exceed 10% of the August output from September to December.

SHANGHAI, Sep 15 (SMM) – Development and Reform Commission announced on September 11 that the average Month output of local industrial silicon companies should not exceed 10% of the August output from September to December.

The raw materials for polysilicon production are trichlorosilane and hydrogen, which are put into the reduction furnace in a certain proportion to undergo thermal decomposition and reduction reactions to produce polysilicon rods.

Trichlorosilane is produced with hydrogen chloride and industrial silicon powder in the synthesis furnace. Industrial silicon lump is produced with quartz ore and carbon under the condition of electrification, and the lump will be pulverized into industrial silicon powder.

According to the regional distribution of China's industrial silicon production in the first three quarters of 2020, Yunnan's industrial silicon production accounted for 21% of the total output, ranking the second following Xinjiang.

The sharp reduction in industrial silicon production may significantly affect the prices of polysilicon.

From January to July 2021, China’s photovoltaic companies have announced a total of 222GW of silicon wafer expansion plans, with an investment of nearly 30 billion yuan, which will intensify the short supply of polysilicon.

Sumitomo Chemical has established mass production of 4-inch Indium Phosphide (InP) epitaxial wafers at its Ibaraki Works and begun commercial sales, becoming one of the few Japanese epi houses capable of stable volume production. The products target photonic-electronic convergence devices for AI data centers and high-speed networks. The company aims to generate approximately JPY10 billion in InP epiwafer sales by the mid-2030s. SMM views the move into commercial production as a direct addition to Japan’s InP material supply and supportive of medium-term high-purity indium demand. Annual wafer capacity, output and indium consumption were not disclosed.

Greenland Resources completed its expanded summer field program at the Malmbjerg molybdenum project. Work covered infrastructure surveys, glacier investigations, RopeCon optimisation and geotechnical inspections. The team also collected 8 tonnes of drill core and 14 tonnes of saline and fresh water for government-supported metallurgical pilot testing. Results will support detailed engineering, key-equipment procurement and construction contracts. On a 100% basis, the feasibility study targets average output of 32.8 million lb (about 14,878 tonnes) of contained molybdenum annually during the first ten years. This remains planned capacity; no final investment or construction decision was announced.

Northcliff Resources filed an updated feasibility study for the Sisson tungsten-molybdenum project in New Brunswick, Canada. On a 100% project basis, reserves total 276.8 million tonnes grading 0.023% molybdenum. The 30,000-tpd project targets average annual output of 4.2 million lb (about 1,905 tonnes) of contained molybdenum over a 27-year mine life. Initial capex is C$1.528 billion. A construction decision is targeted for H2 2027 and operations for 2030. Key environmental approvals are in place, but engineering, financing, offtake and remaining EIA conditions are still outstanding. The project represents potential long-term supply rather than current output.
