SMM8 March 25: German crude steel production fell sharply to 2.4 million tons for the fourth month in a row in July, down 24.7 percent from a year earlier, according to WV Stahl data from the German Iron and Steel Federation. Crude steel production fell 2.1 per cent month-on-month in July. Cumulative output from January to July was 19.9 million tons, down 16.9 per cent from the same period last year.

German steel mills continued to limit production in addition to their routine summer overhaul in July, with blast furnace production of crude steel falling 29 per cent from a year earlier to 1.7 million tons. Crude steel produced by electric arc furnace decreased by 13.1% to 758000 tons.

ThyssenKrupp, Germany's largest steelmaker, said it expected to produce 9 million tonnes of crude steel this year, down from 11 million tonnes "as usual" because of weak demand in its main customer group, the car industry. The company said it would produce at a capacity utilization rate of just over 60 per cent, which is comparable to that of its German counterparts.
