ArcelorMittal to restart Indiana blast furnace

SMM8 March 4: ArcelorMittal is restarting a blast furnace in the port of ArcelorMittal, Indiana, in East Chicago, which is idle by the coronavirus and is repairing the D blast furnace, also at the BurnsHarbor Steel Plant in Indiana, which exploded on July 16. Maintenance work is expected to last for several weeks.

According to the Iron and Steel Technical Association, the annual production capacity of the D blast furnace in BurnsHarbor Steel Plant is 2.48 million tons. According to the company profile, Harbor, Indiana is home to the largest integrated steelmaking facility in North America, with an annual production capacity of about 6.4 million tons.

American Steel, another major steelmaker in northwestern Indiana, has restarted two blast furnaces at the Gary plant, which were idle after the car plant was shut down. It ignited the No. 6 blast furnace immediately after the weekend of July 4 and started the No. 8 blast furnace last weekend.
