SMM7 17 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-Pilbara Port Authority (PPA) reported that its annual throughput in fiscal year 20 reached a record 717.2 million tons due to a surge in exports from Port Hedland.
The Pilbara Port Authority's operations include those of Port Hedland, Dampier and Ashburton, as well as various new ports, with a total annual throughput of 19.9 million tons over the previous year.
The annual throughput of Port Hedland's (Port Hedland) port is the highest of all PPA ports, mainly due to iron ore exports by mining giants such as BHP Billiton (BHP).
Its annual throughput in fiscal year 2019 was 538.1 million tons, an increase of 5 per cent over the previous year. The port's annual iron ore exports were 531.5 million tons, up 5 per cent from the previous year.
According to a report compiled by ACIL Allen Consulting in June, Port Hedland contributed as much as A $64.1 billion to the Australian economy between 2018 and 2019, but that figure will grow further over the next decade.
The report is supported by data from BHP, Fortescue Metals Group,Roy Hill,Rio Tinto,Sandfire Resources,Pilbara Minerals and Mineral Resources and shows that activity at the port is estimated to add $26.2 billion to the economy between 2028 and 2029.
