SMM6 March 1: Brazilian mining company Vale will continue to operate the Itabira iron ore mine, while the court also agreed to continue to operate.
Earlier, Minas Gerais Labor Department officials filed a request in court to suspend operations at the Vale Itabira plant until workers could be tested for Covid-19. But the judge rejected the request, and Vale won a court order to maintain Itabira production and revoked a factory closure order issued by labour regulators in the region.
The Itabira mine consists of two main mines, Cau ê and Concei ã oe Periquito. The mine produced 6 million tons in the first quarter of this year and 36 million tons in 2019, accounting for 12 percent of Vale's total fine powder production in 2019.
