[SMM News] Vale: decommissioning 9 tailings dams for $1.9 billion

SMM News: recently, Vale said in a "disclosure of tailing dams" (Disclosure on Tailings Dams) that the company will spend US $1.9 billion on the decommissioning of nine tailing dams in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The nine dams are 8B Dam (Nova Lima-MG), B3 / B4 Dam (Nova Lima-MG), Fernandinho Dam (at the boundary between Nova Lima and Rio Acima-MG), Fork I dam (Ouro Preto-MG), Fork II Dam (Ouro Preto-MG), Fork III Dam (Ouro Preto-MG), Grupo Dam (Ouro Preto-MG), South Superior Dam (Bar ã odeCocais-MG), Vargem Grande Dam (at the boundary between Nova Lima and Rio Acima-MG)

Vale said two of the dams would be completely decommissioned within three years, five would be converted into downstream dams and the other two would increase the safety factor before decommissioning. The estimated cost reached $150 to $200 million in 2019, about $500 million in 2020 and $150 million in subsequent years.
