Vale appoints Chief Executive Officer for Safety and Excellence

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 5, 2019-Vale announced that Mr., Carlos Medeiros has been nominated by Mr. Eduardo Bartolomeo, Chief Executive Officer, and appointed by the Board of Directors to be the CEO of the company, responsible for the newly created Security and Excellence Operations Division.

Mr. Carlos Medeiros is a senior executive with an international career development background and has worked for Bohr, a leading manufacturer of aluminum cans, as CEO of North and Central America. The 22 plants he manages are located in the United States, Canada and Central America and are the international benchmark for operational excellence. Mr. Carlos Medeiros is knowledgeable in lean manufacturing and has led the factory to obtain the first Shingo certification in Latin America.

Mr. Carlos Medeiros graduated from the Institute of Aeronautical Technology (ITA) majoring in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering with a Master's degree in (ESPM) Marketing from the School of Advanced Advertising and Marketing. Mr. Carlos Medeiros was CEO of Ramey of Rexam and worked for 25 years at NSG Group Pilkington, where he was responsible for operations in South America and Asia. With experience in Chile, Japan, the United States and Brazil, Mr. Carlos Medeiros will bring international best practices to the company's operating standards.

The appointment of Mr. Carlos Medeiros has strengthened Vale's commitment to the world's leading operating standards. Mr. Marcelo Medeiros's excellent ability to lead major transformation projects, together with his strict discipline and process-oriented thinking, will make an important contribution to Vale's operational safety and efficiency.

The creation of a security and excellence operations unit is in line with Vale's new strategic pillars of security and excellence, new agreements between the company and society, and its commitment to becoming the safest and most reliable mining company in the world.
