SMM2 11-Vale located in the Tubarao port iron ore complex part of the sewage treatment plant has been closed, affecting the port coal facilities and 4 pelletizing plants (a total of 8).

The local environmental protection bureau said on Friday that the Vitoria municipal government had ordered the closure of some of the sewage treatment plants because of the discharge of sewage from the production sites into the coastal areas. In a statement, Vale will also be fined 35 million reais ($9.39 million).

Vale immediately made a public statement that it would comply with the order and would analyze its contents in order to take applicable measures. However, it also said that in the latest inspection by the urban environment authorities, the sewerage system did not find any violations, and monitoring reports from October 2018 to December 2018 showed that the wastewater was within the range of established parameters.

Vale stressed that it had been monitoring the bodies of water receiving wastewater for 30 years and had never found any change in water quality.

It is not clear when the sewage treatment plant will resume operation.
