SMM12 26: mining is an important part of the economic and social foundation of BC province. A dynamic, competitive and growing industry has benefited residents across British Columbia. However, rapid change in the industry and the wider community requires bold and innovative solutions to ensure financial competition in the BC mining industry. The mining industry, a basic industry that employs tens of thousands of British Columbia workers, contributes billions of dollars a year to the province's economy.

With the commitment of governments at all levels to invest in innovation, this will help guide the province's mining industry to a brighter future. British Columbia is the world's only producer of molybdenum, the largest producer of copper and steelmaking coal, and the largest producer of gold, silver, aluminum and zinc. Mining is crucial to the high-tech, low-carbon economy of the 21st century.

The mining industry supports solutions that increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve the timeline and predictability of projects.

For any project that has meaningful engagement with local peoples and local communities and meets world-class standards in British Columbia, the regulatory systems of the United States and Canada should rely on a clear, consistent and timely process for approval and approval.

In 2017, mining companies purchased $1.35 billion worth of goods and services from more than 3000 BC companies in 125 communities in the province. In the lower mainland, 1200 companies have benefited more than $460 million from their mining operations, providing technology, goods and services to the mining industry in BC.

In Vancouver alone, 370 companies have benefited from $142 million in investments, hiring individuals and bringing prosperity to the interior as a whole. As the mining industry continues to innovate, it is important to remember that all communities in British Columbia are mining communities.

While the above data are important, if new projects are not implemented, the economic and social contribution of the mining industry will decrease rapidly. There are exciting mining projects in BC, both at an early stage and close to development. At the same time, if the conditions are right, the coal mines in operation in the United States are ready to expand.

Brian Cox, president and chief executive officer of the British Columbia Mining Association, said that by taking action now to ensure competitiveness, the government could create the conditions to attract money to the province to promote new mining projects. Create new jobs for British Colombians promote reconciliation with indigenous communities and provide solutions for the world.
