






SMM11, 14 March; India's Tata Steel plans to increase production at its Kalinganagar plant from 3 million tons per year to 8 million tons per year, the company said late Monday.
Upon completion, Tata Steel's total capacity in India will reach 23.6 million tons per year.
In addition to Kalinganagar, the plant also has a rolling mill of 10 million tons per year in Jamshedpur, while Tata Steel BSL (formerly Busan Steel) has a steel mill of 5.6 million tons per year.
TV Narendran Steel, chief executive and managing director of Tata, said at the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, "Kalinganagar is an extraordinary story for Tata Steel. Within a year of commissioning, we were running at almost full capacity, and now we are starting the second phase of expansion. The product mix envisioned will consolidate Tata Steel's position in the automotive and high-end quality product markets. The Kalinganagar plant is expected to become one of the lowest-cost steelmakers in the world.
