China Tower and 11 EV-makers will establish branches to collect retired power batteries

At a recycling forum in Beijing at the end of October, China Tower a inked an agreement with 11 major manufacturers of electric vehicles (EV) for second-life EV and retired EV batteries.

China Tower, operator of telecommunication towers, and the 11 EV-makers will establish branches across China to collect retired power batteries.

The new-energy vehicle (NEV) industry has grown significantly in China in recent years, said Li Li, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) at the forum. China's overall output of NEVs exceeded 2.56 million by September, with captive batteries above 120 GWh.

By 2020, retired EV batteries are likely to amount to 24 GWh, which would take a toll on the environment. This will provide China with an impetus to develop solutions and standards for retired batteries from electric vehicles.
