Ship orders up 99.6% year on year in Jan-May

China received new ship orders of 19.68 million dead weight mt (dwt) from January to May this year, up 99.6%

SHANGHAI, Jun 13 (SMM) – China received new ship orders of 19.68 million dead weight mt (dwt) from January to May this year, up 99.6% from the same period last year, showed data from the China Association of The National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI). 

China built16.43 million dwt of ships for the first five months of this year, down 28.3% from a year ago. 

At the end of May, orders across China's shipbuilders stood at 89.03 million dwt, up 7.5% year on year. Some 80.04 million dwt were export orders, up 1.5% year on year.

During the first five months of the year, China built 15.48 million dwt of ships for export, down 28.2% from last year. Export orders during the period went up 108% year on year, to 18.34 million dwt.

During the five months, ships for export accounted for 94.2% of China's total shipbuilding completions, 93.2% of the new orders received, and 89.9% of on-hand orders.
