Safety inspections at medium-sized and small mines are likely to be intensified following the blast at an iron ore mine in Liaoning province

SHANGHAI, Jun 6 (SMM) – Safety inspections at medium-sized and small mines are likely to be intensified following the blast at an iron ore mine in Liaoning province, SMM believes.

The blast occurred on Tuesday June 5, when miners dropped explosives down the mine shaft. The death toll stood at 11 people, nine were injured and 25 were trapped in the mine. As of 7:00 am Wednesday June 6, 23 of the 25 trapped people have been rescued.

The mine, at Sishanling Fe deposit in Nanfen district of Benxi city, has the largest iron ore deposit in Asia.

The mine has yet to be commissioned. In 2019, the first stage is expected to be commissioned with annual capacity of 15 million mt of iron ore and 5.31 million mt of iron concentrate. After its second stage is commissioned, annual capacity is expected to reach 30 million mt of ore and over 10 million mt of iron concentrate.

Annual capacity of iron concentrate across state-run mines in Benxi stands at 12-13 million mt. Mines in Benxi have not received any notice after the accident, SMM learned.
