Xuzhou city plans to lower the number of steel companies from 18 to fewer than 10 at the end of this year and to integrate them into a 'Xuzhou Iron & Steel Group' in three years

SHANGHAI, Apr 24 (SMM) – With a focus on environmental protection, Xuzhou city plans to consolidate its current 18 steel mills to less than 10 within this year, and to integrate them into one "Xuzhou Iron & Steel Group" in three years, according to Li Zhongling, deputy researcher of the Xuzhou Economic and Information Technology Commission.

The move is part of the municipal government's effort to optimise the city’s industrial landscape and speed up the industrial upgrading and transformation.

Earlier this month, most steel mills in Xuzhou suspended production for rectification due to provincial-level environmental inspections. These mills included Xuzhou Dongya Steel and Xuzhou Huahong Special Steel.
