Steel mills in Wu’an city of Hebei province continued to see their operations restricted on environmental concerns, SMM learned.

SHANGHAI, Apr 9 (SMM) – Steel mills in Wu’an city of Hebei province continued to see their operations restricted on environmental concerns, SMM learned.

While Wenan Steel and Xinjin Steel were required to relocate, 10 other steelmakers were asked to cut output by 50%. Wenfeng Steel saw two of its rolling lines shut down, and Longfengshan Casting Industry had to close down a 200 m2 sintering facility and an 800 m2 blast furnace.

This followed the issuance of two action plans by the local government last week which stipulated that manufacturers in the steel, coal and cement sectors to cut overcapacity during the second and the third quarter of this year to fight air pollution.

Starting of high polluting and high energy-consuming industrial projects that are mainly powered by coal is also prohibited under the measure.
