SHANGHAI, Aug. 17 (SMM) – Rumor said that all bauxite mines in Shanxi that lack production licenses were ordered to close during August 14-September 14. Another rumor said all bauxite mines in the province, whether they have production licenses or not, would shut down during the 19th NPC meeting this autumn and National Games from August 27 to September 8.

The first rumor is true, SMM confirmed. The second rumor, however, may be exaggerated, since no local mines have received such notice, SMM learned.

Alumina Market to Face Pressure from Weiqiao Group after Big Aluminum Cuts, SMM Warns

Bauxite shortage has already affected production at two local large alumina producers, SMM found. So, local alumina prices showed signs of rising. However, whether alumina prices will rise across the board will partly depend on the amount and sales prices of alumina from Shandong Weiqiao Group.
