SHANGHAI, Aug. 9 (SMM) – China’s refined nickel output was 13,800 tonnes in July, and operations at smelters in northwest and south China varied much.

SMM survey finds that output at smelters in northwest China grew 1,300 tonnes to 11,600 tonnes in July, citing no raw material supply problem and rising nickel price. Production at those in south China was low due to thin profits, only up by 50 tonnes, mainly supplying long-term buyers.

In August, domestic smelters are expected to hold production largely stable at July’s level, but thanks to more working days, output will grow slightly on a monthly basis. SMM expects China’s refined nickel output to rise to 14,300 tonnes in August.

[Vale: Autoclave Arrives at the Sambalagi HPAL Project Site] On July 22, 2026, the key equipment—the autoclave—for the HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leach) project in the Sambalagi area of Morowali, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, arrived, marking an important phase of construction. The project is designed to produce approximately 90,000 mt Ni of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) annually, sourcing raw material from the Bahodopi mine. It comprises three production lines, with the first line targeted for mechanical completion by the end of 2026. The project is being jointly developed by PT Vale Indonesia Tbk and its partners GEM Co., Ltd. (China) and EcoPro (South Korea) through the joint venture PT BNSI. It is an Indonesian strategic national project and forms part of the Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali, aiming to advance downstream nickel processing and the EV battery supply chain.
