Latin American Steel imports from China increase sharply

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): During the first four months of 2017, Latin American steel imports from China increased by 15 percent to 2.6 million tons, when compared to corresponding period last year, as per regional steel industry association Alacero.

From the total imports, 2.3 million tons were rolled steel products and 278000 tons of end user products from 2 million tons of finished steel and 259000 tons of end user products imported during the same period of 2016.

When compared with the total end user product imports from China in January-April 2017, Latin America was the major destination with about 14 percent of the total imports.

Flat steel products represented 65percent of the total at 1.7 million tons, of which alloyed sheets and coils represented 555,000 tons, followed by hot dip galvanized sheets at 370,000 tons and cold-rolled coils with 270,000 tons.
