China’s NPI output was down in May on a monthly basis, SMM data showed. What are major factors behind the decline, and will the decline be continuing in June?

SHANGHAI, Jun. 9 (SMM) – China’s NPI output was down in May on a monthly basis, SMM data showed. What are major factors behind the decline, and will the decline be continuing in June?

Indonesia Cuts Base Export Prices of Nickel Ore, Why?

SMM attributes two reasons behind the output decline on a monthly basis. First, domestic EAF NPI producers in Inner Mongolia suspended or cut output due to big losses, and all EAF NPI producers in Jiangsu halted production for the same reason. Second, demand for low-grade NPI was poor, and some producers shifted to producing pig iron.

SMM expects China’s NPI output to grow by about 8 per cent in June on a monthly basis, though.

China Refined Nickel Output Falls in May MoM, SMM Reports

In June, some RKEF NPI producers are likely to grow output, such as Jiangsu Delong Nickel, which may increase high-grade NPI output along with its stainless steel production resumption. Meanwhile, some low-grade NPI producers resumed production in early June to consume on-hand low-grade nickel ore inventories.

[SMM Analysis] Golden September: Nickel Pig Iron prices slide as China’s mills delay restocking
Nickel Pig Iron prices are approaching CNY 1,100/mtu as Golden September begins, but ample inventories keep Chinese mills cautious on restocking. Cheaper ore cushions Indonesian producers, yet margins continue to narrow. Sustained buying or supply cuts are needed to establish firmer price support.

[SMM Analysis] September Peak Season Falls Short: High-Grade NPI Drops to 1,100, Steel Mills Still in No Rush to Buy
At the start of the September peak season, NPI prices fell to around 1,100 yuan per nickel unit, yet low-price transactions did not trigger widespread restocking. Steel mills hold ample raw material inventories, and with port inventories replenishing, finished product inventory pressure, and reduced production schedules, buyers continued to push for lower prices, with premiums for low-grade material narrowing first. The pullback in Indonesian ore prices provides a cost buffer for smelters, but their profits remain squeezed by lower selling prices, and no clear supply-side reduction has emerged yet. Whether 1,100 can serve as a support level hinges on whether steel mills can sustain purchases after low-price transactions.
