World Ferrous Scrap Trade In 2016: A Region-wise analysis

The World Ferrous Scrap Trade totaled 87.3 million tonnes during the entire year 2016.

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The World Ferrous Scrap Trade totaled 87.3 million tonnes during the entire year 2016. This is with reference to World Steel in Figures 2017 Report published recently by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The EU-28 region emerged as the key importer and exporter of ferrous scrap during the year.

The export by EU-28 region totaled 43.3 million tonnes. Out of this, 25.9 million tonnes were exported to other countries within the region itself. The extra regional exports totaled 17.4 million tonnes. The major importers were Other Europe (11.2 million tonnes), NAFTA (0.9 million tonnes), Africa (1.1 million tonnes), and Other Asia (4.1 million tonnes).

Other Europe’s ferrous scrap exports totaled 1.7 million tonnes in 2016. The exports to the EU-28 countries constituted bulk of the exports. The exports totaled 1.5 million tonnes. The exports to Other Asian countries totaled 0.1 million tonnes. The regional exports too totaled 0.1 million tonnes during the year.

The ferrous scrap exports by CIS region totaled 5.9 million tonnes during the entire previous year. Other Europe was the key scrap consumer, importing 2.7 million tonnes. Intra-regional exports within the CIS region totaled 1.2 million tonnes. The remaining 1.1 million tonnes were exported to Other Asian countries.

The export by NAFTA region totaled 17.2 million tonnes. Out of this, 5.9 million tonnes were exported to other countries within the region itself. The extra regional exports totaled 11.3 million tonnes. The major importers were Other Asia (6.3 million tonnes), Other Europe (3.5 million tonnes), Middle East & Other America (0.5 million tonnes each), EU-28 (0.3 million tonnes) and Africa (0.1 million tonnes).

Other America’s ferrous scrap exports totaled 2.3 million tonnes in 2016. The exports to Other Asian countries constituted bulk of the exports. The exports totaled 1.9 million tonnes. The exports to EU-28 countries totaled 0.3 million tonnes. The regional exports totaled 0.2 million tonnes during the year.

The ferrous scrap exports by Africa and Middle East region totaled 2.8 million tonnes during the entire previous year. Other Asia was the key scrap consumer, importing 2.1 million tonnes. Intra-regional exports within the region totaled 0.1 million tonnes. The exports to Other Europe and EU-28 region totaled 0.5 million tonnes and 0.2 million tonnes respectively.

Japan’s ferrous scrap exports totaled 8.7 million tonnes. Other Asian region accounted for 6.8 million tonnes of the above export. The balance 1.9 million tonnes were exported to China. Meantime, Other Asian region exported 3.1 million tonnes, out of which 2.9 million tonnes were within the region itself. China and Japan accounted for 0.1 million tonnes each of export. Oceania’s exports totaled 2.2 million tonnes during 2016. Other Asia (1.9 million tonnes) and Middle East (0.2 million tonnes) were the extra-regional importers of scrap from Oceania region. The exports within the region totaled 0.1 million tonnes.

The net exports by various regions in 2016 are as follows: EU-28 (+14.4 million tonnes), Other Europe (-16.4 million tonnes), CIS (+4.7 million tonnes), NAFTA (+10.4 million tonnes), Other America (+1.7 million tonnes), Africa and Middle East (+0.8 million tonnes), China (-2.2 million tonnes), Japan (+8.5 million tonnes), Other Asia (-23.9 million tonnes) and Oceania (+2.1 million tonnes).
