SHANGHAI, Dec. 9 (SMM) – Malaysia – now China’s second largest bauxite supplier – could run out of its bauxite reserves in 5-7 years at current mining pace, Shanghai Metals Market estimates.
Malaysia has exported an average 600,000 tonnes of bauxite to China each month since September. Assuming no change of pace, shipments to China can only last about 6 years at current reserves, SMM understands.
Sarawak Aluminum, a Malaysia-based aluminum smelter, said that the country has no plans to build alumina refineries for the foreseeable future, so local bauxite is mostly exported.
Bauxite reserves in Malaysia are estimated at some 40 million tonnes, which are mainly located in Sabah, Sarawak, Kuantan and Johor.
