SHANGHAI, Mar. 14 (SMM) -
Domestic market:
Spot manganese ore prices at Chinese ports fell RMB 0.5/mtu, dragged down by anemic demand from manganese alloy producers. SMM’s survey reveals that no panic sell-off has been reported for now for two reasons. First, manganese alloy prices are already moving at low levels, so any further downside space should be very limited. Second, the pullback in manganese ore prices at ports is normal.
Transactions:
Trading activity was thin at both southern and northern ports, as manganese alloy producers were little interested in buying. Traders ordered a limited amount of imported manganese ore for delivery in April, with little interest in buying spot manganese ore at ports.
Steel prices continued to drop, but decline should be limited for the near term. Iron ore prices also inched down, but will likely rise in the future given that inventories at ports have dropped slightly. Steel mills will continue to put pressure on manganese alloy producers.
