Stalemate between traders and downstream alloy producers continued, and spot prices for manganese ore were flat from a week earlier.

SHANGHAI, Mar.4 (SMM) --

Overseas market:

As of December 2012, sales revenues in OMH increased by 5% to AUD 4.08 billion, despite that global economic environment was not favorable in 2012. The company’s output of manganese ore at Bootu Greek mine totaled 737,000 mt (Mn 36.55%), down 18.2% compared to 902,000 mt in 2011, which was mainly due to operation model at mines and railway transportation problem in 1H 2012. The company's Qinzhou-based company sold 76,000 mt of alloy and 168,000 mt of sintered ore, increasing sales revenue by 7%.

Domestic market:

Stalemate between traders and downstream alloy producers continued, and spot prices for manganese ore were flat from a week earlier. Based on SMM survey result, the recent high prices for manganese ore against low procurement prices for manganese alloy from steel mills made some manganese alloy producers delay the date to resume production. However, overseas suppliers represented by BHP may hike prices for manganese ore by USD 0.25/mtu, which may fore some small manganese alloy producers to halt or cut production.

Transactions:

Supply of manganese ore was relatively ample based on data from China Customs in January and supply shortage was not seen. However, souring difficulties for spot manganese ore with high manganese content were still reported. SMM believes that the supply shortage was mainly caused by deliberate supply control by cargo-holders. In addition, the soft downstream demand as major factor behind quiet transactions.

In general, overseas suppliers are bound to hike offers of manganese ore. Manganese alloy producers had no choice but to halt production.
