Panama to Review Closed Cobre Panama Mine, Orders Power Plant Restart

According to SMM, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino stated that the review of the closed Cobre Panama copper mine will begin next week, and he has ordered the restart of a power plant necessary for the mine's operation. Under the leadership of Mulino's predecessor, the Panamanian government ordered First Quantum to shut down the open-pit mine at the end of 2023 following protests, leading to maintenance issues at the large mine and the accumulation of copper concentrate inventories. Mulino did not specify the purpose of restarting the 300-megawatt thermal power plant, which previously supplied power to the mine.
