On November 9, 2024, leaders of Japan and Peru will sign a joint declaration on mineral mining cooperation this month, aiming to strengthen the supply chain of critical minerals (primarily copper and zinc) between the two countries through Japan. During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, the Prime Minister of Japan will hold a bilateral meeting with Peruvian leaders. Japan, which lacks resources, has been actively enhancing the global supply chain of critical minerals, which are essential components for electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy, and other elements supporting a decarbonized society. It is reported that Japan and Peru plan to develop a 10-year roadmap outlining specific measures in five areas, including economic cooperation for securing mineral resources and energy procurement, personnel exchanges, and security safeguards.
