The gold mine owned by AngloGold, the world's third largest gold miner, has been suspended.

The pits and tunnels are 370km long and meander to a depth of about 4350 meters. it takes 90 minutes for miners to reach the mining surface from the ground, as does the return journey.

But gold production at the Mponeng gold mine has declined steadily in recent years, and miners have to dig deeper to get gold.
