Sumco, a major supplier of silicon wafers in the semiconductor industry, said its capacity had been sold out by 2026, suggesting that the shortage of silicon wafers may not ease in the next few years.
According to reports, Shenggao is one of the few companies to provide dedicated silicon wafers. After announcing its results on Wednesday, the company said that its 300mm silicon wafer production capacity over the next five years is fully booked and currently does not accept long-term orders for 150mm and 200mm silicon wafers, but demand is likely to continue to exceed supply in the coming years.
It is understood that the price of silicon wafers in 2021 is 10% higher than that of the previous year, and Shenggao expects the rise to continue until at least 2024.
Despite strong demand from customers who need long-term supply, it is simply not possible to expand production this year, Mr Shengao said. The company has done its best to optimize its existing production line, and the imbalance between supply and demand of its full range of products (including 200mm and 300mm silicon wafers) is consistent.
