SHANGHAI, Dec 21 (SMM) – An investor asked on the interactive platform of CATL on December 20: "What stage is CATL's research on sodium-ion batteries currently at? Are there any breakthroughs? Will sodium-ion batteries gradually replace lithium batteries? "
CATL replied that it has started the industrialisation layout of sodium-ion batteries, and a basic industrial chain will be formed by 2023.
According to CATL, the company’s first-generation sodium-ion batteries can be used in various transportation electrification scenarios, especially in cold areas. With outstanding advantages, it can also flexibly adapt to all scenarios in the energy storage field.
CATEL said that it uses Prussian white with a higher gram volume in the cathode materials, and it has developed a hard carbon material with a unique pore structure for anode materials, which has high gram volume, easy de-embedding characteristics, and excellent circulation.
As of the battery performance, the first-generation of sodium-ion battery developed by CATL has the advantages of high energy density, high rate charging, excellent thermal stability, good low temperature performance, high integration efficiency, etc. The battery cell’s single energy density is 160 wh/kg.
