"Toshiba develops cobalt-free 5V high-voltage cathode lithium-ion battery"
Toshiba has developed a new generation of lithium-ion battery using cobalt-free 5V high-voltage cathode material, suitable for various applications from power tools to electric vehicles.
The Japanese company showcased this technology at a recent battery seminar in Osaka, claiming that the cathode significantly suppresses the generation of performance-impairing gases as side reactions, ensuring high voltage and high power performance.
In addition, the new battery composition further promotes carbon neutrality and a circular economy, as the battery cathode contains no cobalt and minimal nickel, making it superior in terms of cost and resource conservation.
It is worth noting that cobalt and nickel are widely used to stabilize the cathode of lithium-ion batteries. Cobalt is a rare metal, posing risks in cost stability and supply chain reliability, while nickel prices have recently fluctuated greatly, affecting the cost of batteries."
