After receiving approval from the European Union, Italy plans to allocate €100 million (approximately US$105.8 million) in subsidies for the country's electrolysis cell production. These subsidies will be provided in the form of direct grants, but Italy has not yet revealed details on how the funds will be used.
The European Union stated that the purpose of the plan is to establish the capacity for strategic equipment necessary for energy diversification. The funds will be open to all sectors, except for financial institutions. Italy's plan is necessary, appropriate, and proportionate. The funds can accelerate energy transition and promote the development of certain economic activities that are essential for the implementation of the REPower European Union plan and the Green Deal Industrial Plan.
