Recently, one of the parallel forums of the 2026 World Science and Technology Development Forum—the Hydrogen Energy Empowering New-Type Energy System Construction Forum—was held at the Chongqing Science Hall. Reporters learned at the forum that global hydrogen energy production and sales exceeded 100 million mt in 2025; China's hydrogen energy production and sales remained firmly first in the world, with renewable energy production and sales exceeding 270,000 mt, and development pathways for green hydrogen and green methanol are also being explored at an accelerated pace.
The Chengdu-Chongqing region has been included in the new round of national comprehensive hydrogen energy application pilot programs
For Sichuan and Chongqing, the Chengdu-Chongqing region combines advantages in clean energy, automobile manufacturing, and scientific research innovation. The construction of the Hydrogen Corridor has a solid foundation, with logistics routes and hydrogen refueling networks being continuously improved, and the "Xinjiang–Chengdu-Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle" urban cluster has been included in the new round of national comprehensive hydrogen energy application pilot programs.
Zhang Jinhua, Executive Vice Chairman of the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association, stated that the Chengdu-Chongqing region should transform its resource and industrial advantages into advantages of coordinated development, and accelerate the improvement of the industry chain connecting hydrogen sources, equipment, applications, and services along the Chengdu-Chongqing Hydrogen Corridor. This will help generate regional cooperation experience and build a replicable regional hydrogen energy ecosystem through hydrogen source cost reduction and diversified applications.
Report forecasts that by 2060, cross-regional hydrogen allocation will account for 40% of national demand
The forum released the report "Global Hydrogen Transport Pathway Study: China's Medium and Long-Term Hydrogen Supply-Demand Pattern and Trade Outlook." The report noted that China has currently formed the world's largest hydrogen supply system, serving traditional industries, with usage and production ends highly overlapping; as the supply side gradually shifts toward renewable energy, the demand side is gradually expanding into transportation, power generation, and other fields.
The report forecasts that around 2035, the total volume of hydrogen requiring cross-regional transport nationwide will be approximately 2.6 million mt, accounting for 6% of total national demand; by 2060, the hydrogen requiring allocation will reach 34.5 million mt, accounting for approximately 40% of national demand.
The report recommends that in the near term, China should focus on stable industrial demand in refining, chemicals, steel, and other sectors, as well as direct port utilization scenarios, to form replicable demonstration projects, support project operations through long-term purchase and sales agreements, promote the construction of cross-regional pipeline and other infrastructure with demand foundations, and gradually build a trading system in which the domestic backbone network and international hydrogen-based product trade complement each other.
Guests discuss hydrogen energy industry development; Chongqing plans to build 60 new hydrogen refueling stations
Liu Anmin, Director and General Manager of China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd., stated that the annual output of industrial by-product hydrogen in Sichuan and Chongqing is approximately 600,000 mt, with nearly 40 hydrogen fuel cell car models launched cumulatively and over 200 hydrogen industry enterprises gathered. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the Chengdu-Chongqing region should accelerate the construction and connection of a cross-regional hydrogen corridor, driving the industry into a virtuous cycle of improved infrastructure, higher utilization rates, lower costs, clear profitability, capital inflows, and industrial upgrading.
Li Qian, Deputy Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, stated that a "bottleneck" problem still exists between the hydrogen production end and the hydrogen usage end—how to achieve safe, low-cost, and efficient hydrogen storage and transport. Magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage materials provide a viable pathway for this. China is rich in magnesium resources, with reserves ranking first globally, and the application of magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage materials has become one of the effective pathways to solve the challenge of efficient hydrogen storage and transport.
Zhang Fulun, Deputy General Manager of Qingling Motors (Group) Co., Ltd., stated that Chongqing has clearly proposed in its "15th Five-Year Plan" outline to build the Chengdu-Chongqing Hydrogen Corridor, Electric Corridor, and Hydrogen Production Corridor, promote the large-scale application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and anchor the construction of a western hydrogen energy hub, with 60 new hydrogen refueling stations to be built and 4,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to be put into operation by 2035.
At the forum, the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association signed cooperation agreements with Mingyue Lake Laboratory and Chongqing Digital Transportation Industry Group, and the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association (Mingyue Lake Laboratory) was inaugurated.
