Korea Zinc Accelerates Germanium Expansion; KEMCO Targets Q4 Crude Germanium Production

Published: Oct 28, 2026 00:21 (GMT+8)

Korea Zinc recently said its subsidiary KEMCO began trial production of crude germanium products at Onsan, Ulsan, in August 2026. Mass production is scheduled to begin in Q4 2026, followed by commercial sales in Q1 2027. The company also plans to commence commercial production of 99.999%-pure germanium dioxide in H2 2027, significantly ahead of its original 2028 target.

Korea Zinc also plans to expand its germanium production capacity through the Project Crucible integrated smelting complex in the US. Construction remains scheduled for 2027–2029, with completion and commissioning targeted for the end of 2029. The facility is expected to produce 13 strategic metals, including copper, lead, zinc, germanium, gallium and antimony. The accelerated KEMCO project, combined with the planned US facility, will further expand Korea Zinc’s role in germanium supply chains outside China.

Early mining begins at Malawi’s Kanyika project
[SMM Niobium and Tantalum Flash] Globe Metals & Mining announced that early mining activities had begun at its Kanyika niobium project in Malawi. Excavation is proceeding in batches of approximately 5,000 tonnes of material, with mineralised material being stockpiled for future processing-plant commissioning. The programme will also provide bulk samples for grade verification and non-ore material for roads, foundations and plant terraces. The company continues to target first production in early 2028. The work marks a physical development milestone for a potential African niobium and tantalum supplier, although commercial concentrate or oxide production has not been established. Estimated grades in the planned mining area—approximately 0.45% niobium pentoxide and 0.015% tantalum pentoxide—derive from existing drilling and the resource model and remain subject to sampling verification. The programme should provide further evidence on grade distribution, excavation conditions and material handling as the project advances towards processing.
